Medical Biotechnology

FIRST CYCLE DEGREE

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec, established on July 1, 1971 under the Regulation of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of May 26, 1971, is one of the largest pharmaceutical faculties in Poland. During the first ceremonial inauguration of the academic year 1971/1972, 40 students admitted to the first year of studies took the oath. Eight years later, the Minister of Health and Social Welfare issued a Regulation, which came into effect on October 1, 1979, on the establishment of the Department of Medical Analytics at the Faculty. The first candidates were accepted as students in the academic year 1979/1980. In 2001, by resolution of the Senate of the Medical University of Silesia, the name of the Department of Medical Analytics was changed to the Department of Laboratory Medicine. On October 1, 2019, a new name for the Faculty was established – Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec.

In the academic year 2002/2003, another field of study was introduced, in addition to pharmacy and medical analytics, i.e. first and second cycle cosmetology, and a year later biotechnology (transformed into a two-cycle study program called medical biotechnology).

Currently, candidates have the opportunity to choose one of the following fields of study:

  • pharmacy (full-time, part-time, studies in English)
  • medical analytics (full-time studies)
  • first cycle studies in medical biotechnology (full-time, studies in English)
  • second cycle studies in medical biotechnology (full-time, studies in English)
  • first cycle studies in cosmetology (full-time, part-time)
  • second cycle studies in cosmetology (full-time, part-time)
  • first cycle studies in cosmetic chemistry (full-time)

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec offers postgraduate education in the form of supplementary studies for Qualified Persons working in the pharmaceutical industry, in oenology and herbal commodity science with elements of herbal medicine.

In 1996, the Faculty of Pharmacy established a Specialist Education School (currently the Postgraduate Education School), which offers the following specialist training courses:

  • pharmacy,
  • laboratory medical diagnostics
  • laboratory medical hematology
  • laboratory medical transfusion
  • laboratory medical genetics
  • medical microbiology

In October 2012, the University of the Third Age began operating at the Faculty, which in 2015 won a plebiscite organized by the Association of Social Initiatives in Sosnowiec and the Department of Cooperation with Non-Governmental Organizations of the City Council in Sosnowiec and received the certificate of a Senior-Friendly Place.

The Faculty units also implement an educational project called the University of the High School Graduate. Participation in classes and passing the final exam, organized in the form of a national competition, is a chance for students to gain an additional number of points, taken into account in the recruitment procedure for studies conducted by the Faculty.

The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Sosnowiec also organizes pre-high school courses in biology and chemistry, as well as summer classes for high school students called Holidays on the FARM.
