National Health Fund Insurance

Legal Framework:

  • Based on the Act of 27 August 2004 on healthcare services financed from public funds, individuals meeting specific requirements outlined in the Act are entitled to compulsory or voluntary health insurance in Poland.

Voluntary Health Insurance:

  • Residents in Poland without entitlement to common healthcare services can obtain the right to use healthcare services financed from public funds through voluntary health insurance.

Application Process:

  • To initiate voluntary health insurance, please contact the regional branch of the National Health Fund (NFZ).
  • File an appropriate application and familiarize yourself with detailed terms, including required documents/statements, charges, premiums, etc.

  • Find the contact details of the National Health Fund branch for the Silesia region on the NFZ website.

Emergency Situations:

  • In case of emergencies, foreign students can visit the 24-hour GP healthcare unit or use hospital emergency services.

Obligatory Medical Checkup:

  • The AGMED Sp. z o.o. at ul. Morcinka 15-17, 40-124 Katowice, is responsible for students’ obligatory medical checkup in cooperation with the University in the year 2023.

Regular GP Medical Services:

  • Each student needs to sign up with a medical facility of their choice for regular GP medical services.

Psychological Support:

  • For mental health struggles, there is a Psychological Support Point at the Medical University of Silesia, catering to students seeking assistance during their studies.

Student Dormitories in Katowice

Location:

Dormitories are situated on the campus of the University in Katowice-Ligota at 24 and 26 Medyków Street and

in Zabrze at 19 Jordana Street and 42 and 44 M. Curie Skłodowskiej Street.

 

Katowice:

Dormitory at 24 Medyków Street:

·     Offers 112 single rooms.

·     Each room has a kitchenette and a bathroom with a sink, shower or bathtub, and a toilet.

·     Internet access available in each room.

Dormitory at 26 Medyków Street:

·     Offers 98 single rooms.

·     Each room has a kitchenette and a bathroom with a sink, shower, and toilet.

·     Internet access available in each room.

Additional Facilities:

·     Students can use quiet study rooms, laundry, and parking.

 

Zabrze:

Dormitory at 19 Jordana Street:

·     Offers 89 rooms grouped into 39 segments.

·     The segment consists of 2 or 3 bedrooms and a bathroom. Kitchens are communal, 2 on each floor.

·     There are 2 laundry rooms , 4 quiet study rooms, TV room.

·     Internet access available in each room

Dormitory at 42 M. Curie-Skłodowskiej Street:

·     Offers 81 rooms with internet access

·     2 sanitary facilities and 2 public kitchens in each corridor.

Dormitory at 44 M. Curie-Skłodowskiej Street:

·       Offers 80 rooms with Internet access.

·       2 sanitary facilities and 2 public kitchens in each corridor.

 

 

Pricing (According to SUM Rector’s Ordinance):

Basic Standard Rooms:

  • Place in a 21 m² room: PLN 1 136 / 265 EUR / 290 USD per person.
  • Place in a 27 m² room: PLN 1 228 / 285 EUR / 312 USD per person.

Rooms of a Higher Standard:

  • Place in a 21 m² room: PLN 1 344 / 312 EUR / 340 USD per person.
  • Place in a 27 m² room: PLN 1 460 / 340 EUR / 370 USD per person.

  • Students applying for a place in the dormitory should submit an appropriate application at the time and place determined by the Dean’s Office.

Green city

City is full of parks, which makes Katowice one of the greenest cities in Poland. Around 40% of the area of the city are forrests. One of the greatest parks in Katowice is Silesian Park. It is one of the biggest park in the whole Europe.

Katowice was the first city in Poland, which introduce the „Plan of the low-emission economy”. This plan contribute improving air quality and Energy security.

Social life – city of events

It is worth to mention that Katowice was a host during COP 24 – UN Climate Summit, organized in 2018. Beside this, city is known from music festivals like Silesian Jazz Festival, Rawa Blues Festival, Off Festival or Tauron Nowa Muzyka. Additionally annually are organized theater festivals like A PART International Theater Festival and Summer Theater Garden.

One of the most famous buildings in Katowice is Spodek Arena, place where organized are sports events and concerts. It is a symbol of modern architecture.

Katowice is a transfer center, beside of very good connection with majority of polish cities, train station in Katowice gives possible for trips abroad, thanks for connection with for example Prague or Vienna.

Airport in Katowice (airport is around 30km from Katowice – in Pyrzowice) has connection with all bigger cities in Europe. Access to airport is possible thanks to buses connected with the center of Katowice. Based on plans, in the end of 2023, will be open passenger rail link.
