In the Didactics and Medical Simulation Center in Katowice, there are six simulation rooms (an operating room, an intensive care room, two hospital emergency rooms, a pediatric room and a delivery room, and an area adapted to simulating pre-hospital events with an ambulance simulator). In addition, the University expanded its base in the field of medical simulation with two new locations in Katowice and Zabrze, intended for students of nursing and midwifery (Katowice) as well as medical and dental-medicine (Zabrze). Thanks to this, students can use the acquired knowledge and train the skills necessary in their future work. At CSM in Zabrze, on five floors, students have 7 simulation rooms at their disposal, equipped with the most modern phantoms. Two rooms equipped with real dental units and phantoms allow you to practice the manual skills of future dentists. Teeth models, the structure of which reflects various clinical cases, allow for learning the treatment of caries, placing fillings or root canal preparation. Modern simulation is not only simulators, but also more and more advanced computer software. Thanks to the partnership agreement with Asseco Poland SA, SUM, as the first university in Poland, launched a laboratory at CSM to learn how to comprehensively operate the IT hospital system. This enables students to acquire the necessary skills in the use of IT tools that they will encounter in hospitals or clinics. Medical simulation classes are also held with the participation of the so-called standardized patients – these are specially employed people who, after completing the appropriate training, play the role of patients. Thanks to this, students learn how to build relationships and appropriate communication with patients and their families, as well as transfer difficult information.
Clinical classes and internships are conducted in modern medical facilities offering patients a wide range of medical services. Thanks to the highly specialized clinical base of SUM, students have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the most technologically advanced equipment that is used in the diagnosis and treatment of patients, and learn from the best specialists in their field.
