HISTORY
The Faculty of Medical Sciences in Katowice (WNMK) was established under the Ordinance of the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of June 16, 1975 transforming one Faculty of Medicine of the Silesian Medical Academy into two faculties: the Faculty of Medical Sciences based in Katowice and the Faculty of Medical Sciences based in Zabrze. In the same year, the first recruitment of students for the medical faculty took place. The Clinical Teaching Team in Tychy was incorporated into the WNMK and for its needs the Central Teaching Hospital in Katowice-Ligota was transferred in 1974. This decision significantly supplemented the academic clinical facilities, previously based mainly on the City Hospital No. 4 in Katowice, which in 1960 was transformed into a Clinical Hospital. Important events in the development of the clinical infrastructure serving the growing teaching needs of WNMK were the commissioning in 1977 of the first Polish Institute of Ophthalmology in Katowice (since 1989 functioning as a department and clinic on the premises of a new clinical hospital) and the Upper Silesian Medical Center in Katowice - Ochojec, which is the seat of dynamically developing Chairs and clinics of cardiology and cardiosurgery, since 1986 in the structure of the Upper Silesian Center of Cardiology. In the years 1990 - 2001 WNMK had a Nursing Department, which was eventually incorporated into the Department of Care and Health Education.
In the initial period of the faculty's activity, an urgent need was to recruit, for the needs of WNMK, research and teaching staff as well as to provide an appropriate teaching infrastructure and research base. A significant improvement in this respect, and at the same time a factor conducive to the consolidation of the department, was the commissioning of the first complex housing medical theory departments and the administration of the Military University of Lodz (building C1 in Katowice-Ligota, 1978), with, among others, Chairs and Departments of Normal Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, Pathomorphology, General Medical Biology. In the following years, not without obstacles related to financial difficulties, further complexes of medical theory plants were put into operation (buildings C2 and C3 in Katowice - Ligota). Thus, teaching facilities were created, housing not only 15 departments and departments of the theory of medicine, but also lecture halls, a library, dean's office and faculty administration rooms. In the following years, units representing the area of medical theory were gradually modernized, improving both the teaching infrastructure and the instruments for conducting scientific research. In 2005, the Experimental Medicine Center was incorporated into the structure of the Faculty as an experimental and breeding unit. A very significant event was the opening, in 2012, of the first in Poland and one of the most modern in Europe Medical Teaching and Simulation Center, where selected classes in the medical education program are conducted. At the same time, in the first twenty years of WNMK's operation, the clinical units in Katowice were consolidated and the modernization programs in these units were continued.
The structure of the WNMK today was largely shaped at the end of the 20th century. It is also a period of dynamic development of activity in the field of teaching, research and clinical activities. WNMK achieved a high position on the map of Polish academic medicine. WNMK employees joined the activities of domestic and international scientific communities.
